Has an international reputation for producing world-class television and film

In its 19 years South Pacific Pictures has produced more than 3000 hours of programming. Its output includes teen and family entertainment, primetime drama series, entertainment, reality programming, documentaries, TV movies and feature films, including the internationally - acclaimed Oscar nominated Whale Rider. The current slate includes work for New Zealand, Australian, Canadian and UK broadcasters.

South Pacific Pictures' cornerstone production is the primetime nightly serial drama Shortland Street, now in its 15th year on air. Shortland Street consistently wins its 7pm timeslot and regularly attracts over 50% share of the key 15-39 demographic. The programme has been seen in 20 countries worldwide and over 3,750 episodes have screened on New Zealand television.

Production highlights include South Pacific Pictures' 2006 feature film, Sione's Wedding, a contemporary, urban, romantic comedy set in Auckland's smart-talking, street-savvy Polynesian community. Sione's Wedding won critical acclaim and broke box office records when it opened in cinemas throughout New Zealand in March 2006 and was New Zealand's top-selling DVD on release that year.

 

In early 2007 South Pacific Pictures and Greenlit Rights co-produced The Man Who Lost His Head, a light-hearted telemovie starring Martin Clunes as Ian Bennet, a repressed British museum curator, whose life is turned upside down when he is sent across the world to return an ancient Maori carving to the small fictional New Zealand town of Otakataka. The Man Who Lost His Head will screen on TVOne in New Zealand and ITV (UK) later this year.

 

Also on air in 2007 is the third series of award-winning primetime drama Outrageous Fortune (22 x 1 hour). The success of Series 1 (13 x 1 hour) and 2 (16 x 1 hour plus 1 x 2 hour telemovie) of Outrageous Fortune cemented the show as New Zealand's standout drama. The two series have won awards for Best Drama Programme, Best Actor and Best Actress. The show has been sold into Australia, Ireland, Slovenia and the UK.

 

South Pacific Pictures' latest feature film is We're Here to Help, a David and Goliath comedy, based on a true story about a guy who had a titanic run-in with the tax department.and won. The film which stars Erik Thomson in the lead role of Dave Henderson, was written and directed by Jonothan Cullinane. It is due for New Zealand release in late 2007.

 

South Pacific Pictures is an international award-winner. Whale Rider has received multiple awards including an Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category in 2004 as well as the 2003 award for Best Feature Film in the BAFTA Children's Awards, nine 2003 New Zealand Film Awards and awards from international film festivals including Sundance and Toronto. The teenage drama Being Eve was nominated for an International Emmy. Maddigan's Quest, a kids and family drama series for CBBC (UK), Nine Network (Australia) and TV3, based on a concept by Margaret Mahy, won two New York Festivals' bronze medals in 2006 and a silver world medal in 2007.

 

South Pacific Pictures is led by CEO John Barnett. It is owned by Barnett's company, Endeavour Entertainment and ALL3MEDIA.
