Leading independent television, film and digital production and distribution company All3Media announced today that it has acquired the production companies Raw and betty from Discovery Communications.
Raw and betty are the creative forces behind a slate of popular, critically acclaimed and award-winning documentaries, factual entertainment, reality formats, and dramas in both the UK and US. Both betty and Raw launched their production houses in 2001 and were acquired by Discovery Communications in 2011 and 2014, respectively.
Raw has gained a reputation for producing a diverse slate of high quality and original scripted, reality formats, films and feature documentaries including Gold Rush, one of Discovery Channel’s most-watched series of all time with viewers around the globe, CNN’s Race for the White House, BBC One’s The Doctor Who Gave Up Drugs, BBC Two’s Conviction, Murder at the Station, and the critically acclaimed BAFTA winning film The Imposter. Most recently, Raw produced the hit scripted series Harley and the Davidsons for Discovery Channel and its next major feature film American Animals is currently shooting and slated for release in 2018.
betty makes high quality, factual television programmes with a sense of fun, which aim to provoke debate and create adventure. It has produced hit shows which have sold around the world including the award winning The Undateables, Tricks of The Restaurant Trade, Ugly House to Lovely House with George Clarke, Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners and The Autistic Gardener for Channel 4, ITV’s Bear Grylls: Mission Survive and Everest Rescue for Discovery.
Jane Turton, All3Media Chief Executive Officer said: “Raw and betty are both incredibly strong creative businesses with very exciting production and development slates and hugely talented and well respected teams. Acquiring Raw and betty strengthens our content offering and talent base, in the UK, US and internationally.”
“Raw and betty are impressive, long-running production companies with great creative credentials and track records and strong IP, and we have been proud to have them as part of Discovery Communications,” said Marc Graboff, President, Global Business & Legal Affairs, Production Management and Studios for Discovery Communications. “Since launching our joint venture with All3Media, we have gained an even greater appreciation for the company’s dynamic and creative ecosystem, and we are confident that theirs is the best environment in which to nurture further growth and success for these two outstanding production companies.”
Raw’s founder Dimitri Doganis added “This is an exciting next step for Raw. All3Media houses such an impressive collection of creative talent, we are delighted to be joining such a strong stable. We’ve enjoyed our relationship with Discovery and very much hope that will continue at the programming level as we look to explore new opportunities and funding models going forward with the team at All3Media.”
betty joint Managing Directors Neil Smith and Matthew Littleford said: “We can’t wait to join the All3Media family and are excited that we will be working with them to take betty to the next level. We’re really looking forward to growing our business even further, developing and making some great news shows, selling them to an even wider audience and continuing to be a place where people really enjoy working.”
