Cary Grant sits in his plush dressing room at Culver Studios, California, waiting to be called to set by his director, Alfred Hitchcock. Suddenly he gets a visitor, a Dr. Timothy Leary. Having read about Grant’s dabbling with LSD in an interview with Good Housekeeping magazine, Leary is keen to try the magical new drug. Grant, however is insistent that the powerful substance only be taken under medical supervision.
What follows is a whimsical hallucinogenic ‘trip’ through psychological space and time, with the two men together exploring past, present and future memories: Grant’s Edwardian childhood in Bristol, England, as well as the fame Leary will go on to achieve through propagating the use of LSD in the 60s.
Starring Ben Chaplin as Grant and BAFTA nominated Aidan Gillen as Leary, When Cary Grant Introduced Timothy Leary to LSD is a playful imagining of two of history’s most fascinating characters meeting on the set of one of Hitchcock’s most revered films. The one-off was released in February 2017 on Sky Arts as part of their ‘Urban Myths’ series. It is written by EMMY award winner Roger Drew and Ed Dyson, and directed by Geoffrey Sax.
