Gogglebox launched on Channel 4 in 2013 and has become the network’s most popular programme. Attracting more than five million viewers each week, it has become the tent pole of its Friday nights, running for 30 weeks of the year. Funny, poignant, controversial and current, it shows the indispensable role of TV in the fabric of people’s lives and provides a snapshot of the national weekly conversation.
In 2015 the programme won a BAFTA and in 2016, the multi-award winning Gogglebox won the National Television Award for best factual entertainment series for the second year running, as well as the Grierson Award for most entertaining documentary.
The Gogglebox format has been successfully adapted in 32 territories. The Australian and Norwegian versions of the Studio Lambert format won awards at their national top TV awards ceremonies this year. The format has been particularly successful in Belgium (five series in French and three series in Flemish, with a quick turnaround special made after the Brussels bombing) and Poland. The Lebanese version has families sitting on the sofa smoking shisha and the Mongolian version features families in a yurt.
