Set in 1960s rural England, the series follows Inspector George Gently (Martin Shaw) and Detective Sergeant John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby) as they spend their days revealing the dark underbelly of a society on the cusp of change.

The pilot episode opened with the murder of Gently’s wife. On the brink of retirement, Gently decides to hold off in order to return to work and find his wife’s murderer. Addicted to the job, Gently remains unable to retire from the force and over the next 8 series we watch as he and Bacchus become a crime-fighting duo with a seemingly unyielding passion for justice.

Throughout the series both Gently and Bacchus push themselves to the limit, and at times even risk their own lives for the greater good.

Set in a time of great social change, the show never fails to be culturally aware, with the crimes set against a background of nostalgia for the swinging 60’s.
